How Does It Work?
Students were involved in each stage of designing and building the garden. We broke ground on Monday, April 22nd, 2013, and it was a great success!
Now parent volunteers support our teachers and students to maintain this fabulous outdoor classroom.
During the spring of 2019 we will be focusing on growing a "pollinator garden" to attract and support all types of pollinators to our garden. We are currently (February 2019) in the planning stages so please stay tuned!
We are also a part of established programs in Salt Lake like Wasatch Community Gardens' Youth Gardening to make it easier for us to involve students in the garden. We are also working together to set up a SLCSD-wide network of school gardens that support each other.
We are continually creating connections with local businesses for donations, discounts, and advice.

Benefits of Gardens in Schools
Research shows garden-based learning programs have benefits for students in and out of the classroom. Kids in schools with gardens used for education demonstrate higher science test scores, better eating habits, and improved attitudes about learning.

Science
Teaching science in an outdoor, hands-on environment will help engage more students and encourage curiosity about the natural world. Governor Hebert has even highlighted the increased importance of STEM education (Science Technology Engineering Math) for our kids' future in the workforce.
Wellness
Learning in the garden helps kids become better at identifying vegetables. It also makes it likely they will eat more of them. The garden is intended to have long-lasting impacts on kids life-style and habits.
